PHOENIX - Eric Decker doesn't think Richard Sherman has a difficult choice to make.
When it comes to choosing between being at the birth of a child and playing in the Super Bowl, Decker said it's not even close.
"Well, it's different when it's a girlfriend and a wife,'' Decker said on WFAN radio. "So I think if it was my wife giving birth, you know, ultimately I believe my purpose is to be a father and a husband. In fact, the Jets receiver said Friday that Sherman's indecision on the matter is "a cop-out.''
"It's easier said now because I'm not preparing for the game and I'm not in that situation. But with a clear mind, I guess, thinking about that situation he's in -- I mean, you never want to be in it. You've gotta time your conception a little better, I would say. But I would be there for my wife and my newborn child.''
Sherman's girlfriend says he'll play in Super Bowl
Sherman said his girlfriend, Ashley Moss, is due sometime in the coming week. The couple has a contingency plan in place should Moss go into labor while they're in Arizona, but it's unclear if Sherman will skip the Super Bowl to attend the birth of his son, if it comes to that.
Decker doesn't understand why there would be a conflict in the first place.Seahawks coach Pete Carroll said Friday that he will leave the decision up to Sherman. Moss told a TV station that the "Legion of Boom'' star will suit up on Sunday.
"I couldn't miss that,'' said Decker, whose pop-country singer wife, Jessie James Decker, gave birth to their first child (a daughter) last March. "That's the Super Bowl of my life.''
During his radio spot with WFAN, Decker said he's still trying to convince his best friend, former Broncos teammate Demaryius Thomas, to join him with the Jets if he hits free agency.
Decker first divulged to Newsday in October that he's "always trying'' to recruit Thomas to the Jets. But the Broncos likely will give their star receiver a new deal or use the franchise tag on him to avoid having Thomas hit the free-agent market.
Thomas also told Newsday that he and Decker hope to play together before they retire. "Yeah, we talked about it,'' Thomas said by telephone in October. "It wouldn't be bad at all. To start and then retire together, or however it ends, that'll be a good story to tell our kids.
